My writing mentor when he was 20 was a formula one racer (is now building race cars and driving in senior races.) He quit racing to become a writer after an accident where his car was launched over another (both cars open cockpit, by the way), and he was fine but his tire marks were on the helmet of the driver of the car he flew over. He felt writing was safer, fool that he is.

Most engaging series EVER. A bit of the Baja 1000 meets the Kardashians but I am so all in. LOVE IT

I certainly will check out this series! Thanks for the heads-up, Will. While reading your piece, I was reminded of a 1966 mediocre film about F1 drivers called Grand Prix with James Garner and Jessica Walter. Even though it was pretty bad, it really peeked my 15 year old interest in F1 racing. It’s definitely better and a hell of a lot more more fun to watch than that damn 2 hour, 0-0 soccer game nightmare any day! Check it out, especially to see the old 1966 F1 cars.

Inherited my love of auto racing from my dad who grew up in Indy and worked at the racetrack in high school. When I was young, the 500 wasn't broadcast live on TV so we listened to it together on the radio. Knowing how much I loved it, my family and friends gave me a private race car driving lesson for my 60th birthday taught by a former Indy competitor. The catch was I had to use my own car which was a nice BMW at the time. One of the great experiences I've ever had. That was the good news. The bad news is that free gift cost be 4 tires and a set of brakes. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

That is a classic "free gift" story. Every time I watch an episode and see the winner doing spins in a cloud of burning rubber I think, "What are you doing?! You're wasting those tires!"
