When we moved into our present condo, our first introduction to our downstairs neighbors was an apology that our toilet overflowed and send a torrent of waste through the ceiling and into their unit. Somehow they managed to forgive us and we became fast friends.
“Moving sucks the moon right out of the sky.” That and so many other things that make this a great post. I’m sending this to my son who has to move. Will it help or scare him?
I feel your pain and in fact I think we were there to see it! We’ve moved a million times and all of them went relatively smoothly except the time, at our present house, where we had to rent a “pod” to store some bedroom stuff while we remodeled. A few months later we were ready to unpack the pod and found that everything had been soaked by a rain 2 months earlier. Most of the stuff was from our bedroom and there were moldy sheets, pillows, towels, bedding. But the worst was the moldy mattress. Green and black fuzz all over! Stinky!! It was beyond gross! The pod people would not take responsibility and we had to replace everything!
You'll have to ask my lovely wife (your wonderful mother) about horror stories, because mostly I've managed to avoid the worst of it by being stuck at work, sometimes completely out of the country. I would recommend that the next time you move.
If you lived in that apartment for only 2 1/2 years you should have little to complain about. We moved last September. I had raised a family and lived in the same house for 35 years. It took about a month to prepare for the move. I begged my kids to come take things we no long wanted. And then the glorious day arrived. It was a long hard two days but we are settled into our new home. What did I learn from this: make it a practice to purge. Get rid of old shit you won't ever look at again. You will feel relieved.
As one who has moved to 6 different cities by the time he was 17, and sometimes moving within those cities, your current theme has chilled me to the bone. My remedy for moving is kerosene and a match! Mortified to read that the management company was a stable of horse's asses and delighted that you got out of there and now "over the moon" which did not have the "life sucked out of it"!
I'm certain that everyone who follows you has had similar if not worse adventures when they packed up their Conestoga wagons and traversed west or anywhere. Hence why I'm thrilled to have lived on Ethel Ave for 28 years...longer than anywhere else in my life.
Again, thank you for your continued creative literary connection and sharing with others.
Take good care, keep safe and HAPPY NEW YEAR in your GLORIOUS digs!

Wow, you describe the process so perfectly! Congratulations on surviving.
thank you! And it really was a miracle I survived but now, it's wonderful!

Oh my god, that's certainly not the best way to make friends...although maybe it is?

Thank you! And if I did my job right, it'll help him AND scare him!
Lee Chemel I competely agree. Love that phrase!

as someone who almost missed the move due to covid, I can confirm that would be hell on my anxiety!
No, it's great! If you have work, there's nothing you can do and it's not your fault.
We decided to save ourselves the misery during our latest move and hired cleaners and movers 😅 it was worth it!
Next time I'm 100% in on movers and or cleaners. Especially the cleaners! I hate cleaning an old apartment, I just wanted to be out of there!
