Yeah, it’s 86 degrees at 4:00 PM Tuesday, or what we call WDB Time, but the morning was cool and foggy, and there’s been more than a hint of Fall in the air lately. Like you, I love digging out the sweaters, even though once again I forgot to take them to the dry cleaners in June, so there’ll be a brief delay for funk removal before the fashion show begins. But the thing I look forward to the most is the annual reappearance of our ancient set of flannel sheets. Nothing better than burrowing into them on a cool evening and feeling the heat build up around you, then waking early the chilly morning after and burrowing even deeper for a few gloriously toasty minutes more!
Oooo, I forgot the flannel sheets! That was one of my signals of autumn when Mom changed the crisp, cool cotton sheets to flannel. Maybe I'll buy some.......
I prefer summer, but autumn has its positives. It always takes a while for me to accept that summer is over and that it's gotten colder. So I'm usually under-dressed and shivering for a couple days.
Don't foget to mention the logo'd sweatshirt. Go home team!! Go local sports franchise!! Here's a momento of the state fair you attended and bought on a whim that you'd never wear again!! Or Christmas themed top that your sister gave you and is too small but you need to wear every Christmas anyway!! Plus we're in Southern California where the opportnities are scarce. Thank you Will, because you've triggered me to go to Goodwill and spead the love.
Oddly enough, fall is wonderful because it's an opportunity to finally get warm. Jackie allows me to turn off the a/c (typically set like our ice maker) and put the climate control to heat.
Autumn is my favorite season, although I'm forever fighting my lifelong allergies that make me miserable. I love the colors, the particular crispness of the air that is only in autumn. I adore the no a/c-no heat-no humidity precious few days in the Midwest, and prefer the early freshness and clarity of autumn. I have always been a nester (my Taurus identity,) and autumn is the signal for that, without the doldrums of gray, cold, interminable winter.
What is my absolute signal of the seasonal change? When it doesn't get out of the 50s day or night, and I don't want to turn on the heat, so I turn on the oven. We turn off the pilot light on our restaurant stove in the summer - it generates too much heat. When we light the pilot light, for a short time, it's enough to warm the house. I used to bake bread, but I don't do that anymore. Now, my first signal is my beloved oven baked beef stew, or spareribs with my homemade barbecue sauce, or a brisket that reminds me of my mother's, but with my own spin (there isn't any recipe I can leave alone.) The aroma, with that dry heat of the oven, permeates and warms our 104 year old Chicago bungalow. It's something that can only happen in autumn. Love!
I love sweatshirts! But I start earlier in the year than you. On they go if the thermometer hits 70 or lower!!!

For the first time in months, I wore sweatpants today. What a rush!
