I love summer…well, despite the oppressive heat and my aversion to it. But, besides that, I love summer. It’s just so magical, so full of possibilities. Those feelings are probably tied to childhood memories of summer vacations spent swimming, frolicking, and just generally getting into mischief…and if there’s one sporting event that really, truly, screams “summer” it’s an afternoon baseball game.
I’m retired but enjoy watching baseball any day. Nick K watches while he works from his condo in Mammoth Lakes. So his comments would be more appropriate.
Don’t forget to raise a glass and toast the Camelshits this Thursday 5/19 which is the 22nd anniversary of Camelshit Day in LA. We are waiting for you to make a comeback
As I remember, your father took you on a tour of baseball stadiums. Or was it spring training? At any rate, I'm jealous of either. My dad was a slight baseball fan, and he took me to a Kansas City A's game (yes, that was a long time ago) and rather than drop his transistor radio he dropped a foul ball. Sometimes even one's wonderful father can make the wrong decision. Great blog, Will. Except my satellite company doesn't get the Dodgers, so I'm bitter.
The internet has opened the floodgates of misogyny, racism, anti-LGBTQ hatred and all kinds of religious extremism, but hey, at least we get streaming baseball, old Dire Straits concerts, highlights of Colbert/Meyers/Noah, and videos of dogs pressing word buttons to make adorable sentences. I love to have a day game on when I'm writing, usually with the sound muted. As you said, it's a reminder of childhood, and feels a little like you're getting away with something. But a summer night game playing silently on your phone when you're at a play you've quickly realized is going to be terrible can be a gift, too. Years ago, when I was recovering from reconstructive surgery on my knee from (naturally) a softball collision, I'd do my physical therapy and live on ice bags and Advil until the Dodger game came on at 7:10. And for those 2 1/2 to 3 hours Fernando, Hershiser, Russell, Sax, Guerrero and the magical voice of Vin would be a sweet distraction. It helped more than any painkiller.
"...being in the sun for a questionably long amount of time (don’t worry mom I’ve put on sunscreen not once but twice…no, I have no idea how I still got sunburned)" -- LOL. Really enjoyed this post. Also: Let's play two! (Ask your dad.)
I have always loved baseball. Day games have been a joy ever since childhood. Thanks to the DVR I never miss a game. Fast forward and pause have made watching even better, particularly when my bladder calls "time out".
What’s even better? Afternoon and evening games! My TV and I are very happy.
and they won both!

It was a tour of east coast stadiums and Cooperstown! It was truly one of the best trips of my life.
You can come over here any time!

I got him a framed Ernie Banks poster when we were in Cooperstown! Love that quote
He knows that quote already!
Clearly raised right. :)
