hate them. If I am somehow forced to watch one, the only way I get through it is by muttering, "there's a catering table right off to the side of what I'm watching, and there's a crew guy over there right now eating a donut."

I do hate scary movies but this one I worked on. It was even scary to watch.

Definitely only the "it's about not seeing the monster" type of scary movies for me. I used to have a scary movie buddy but then I moved away and now I'm too scared...

Great post! I'm with you about scary movies. But....the original The THING was in 1951. Not the 80s version. It would be fun to watch all three back to back. Well, not me but your fiancée maybe?

Ghost movies, scary science fiction, demon possession - those are the types of scary movies I like. Especially if they're well imagined, well written; although everyone enjoys some camp. Any version of Turn of the Screw, even the modern remake, The Turning. The Other is excellent. Invasion of the Body Snatchers - the scariest version is the Donald Sutherland version. I stumbled on a movie the other day that drew me in: an apocalyptic story that surprised me with its writing and building plot turns - A Knock at the Cabin. It wasn't until the end that I saw it was by M. Night Shyamalan. Now, HE knows how to do the kind of scary I like.

No zombie movies. And slasher movies, anything with people doing grotesque, gory things to other people - I. Just. Can't. I've never seen a Halloween movie and I never will. That is the stuff of nightmares.

BTW, check out the original The Thing (From Another World.) 1951.

I am not a fan of traditional scary movies. Slashers, the undead, monsters and the like are just not for me. I do, however, enjoy the more cerebral scary stuff. My all-time favorite example is 2001: A Space Odyssey. It made me think and be afraid of those thoughts. Genius.

I seriously dislike scary movies, particularly the blood and gore horror ones. Cece is a prize, but you have my admiration for seeing these movies with her. Beth likes scary movies more than I but draws the line at slasher flicks. Oddly, one of our first dates was to see John Carpenter’s “Halloween.” It may be the last John Carpenter movie I’ve seen.

We weren't allowed to watch anything scary growing up because my mom didn't want to lose sleep at night while we would probably be awake and calling out for company. She was smart. And I don't see any reason to start watching scary things as an adult. Somehow I ended up seeing The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, and the ending still scares me. Who was playing the organ??!!! (Sorry for the spoiler.)

It's the opposite over here. I love scary movies but Aina refuses to watch them. So, naturally, haven't seen many scary movies lately! But back in high school? Man, that was my prime horror movie era. My buddy and I would actually make plans to watch the scariest movies imaginable to see how far we could push our limits. The Human Centipede, Midnight Meat Train, The Grudge to name a few. Some of your readers might call this a morbid hobby, but I'm fairly confident Cece would approve.

Special shoutout to Cabin in the Woods, a top-5 favorite film in any genre.

Loved this one, Will. I really enjoy scary movies…but not TOO scary! My three favorites are It Came From Outer Space (I always covered up my neck after seeing it), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (who doesn’t love that one?), and the scariest of the three, The Exorcist (what a head spinner!). Looking forward to my next scare!!! 👹
