It's the best. We have a pool (it came with the house and is a huge financial pain in the ass) and every summer I swear I'm going to use it, but I never do because I'm not about to pay to heat it and I hate jumping into cold water. But this year on the advice of my physician I've determined to get some nice low impact aerobics in and today (after picketing like a good union member) I stood at the edge for almost an entire minute trying to build up the courage to take the leap. I almost went back into the house but I sucked it up and leaped...leapt?...and I didn't die! I swam ten laps, realized how out of shape I've become and determined to swim 12 tomorrow, 14 the next day, etc. until I run out of daylight. BUT! The whole point of this digression was to say - air conditioning is so much more benign a way to get cool! Along with Windex and Dawn it's an amazing invention!

During the summer months, Jackie and I engage in the battle of the thermostat. She prefers it cold for sleeping and her morning treadmilling. I spend my nights looking for an extra blanket and my mornings in sweat clothes. The things we do for love!

We have A/C in our new home in the Santa Ynez Valley. And lately it’s been hot… 90 plus degrees most days. We open the windows before we go to bed and close them in the morning. That and ceiling fans keep us cool enough to survive hot days without running the A/C. I’m cheap and don’t want to use fossil fuels to cool the house and contribute to more undesirable climate change.

I miss having a pool. My parents got one when I was in middle school and I sure do miss the option of spending the day in their backyard on a hot summer day. It just feels so good to jump into the cold water when the air is super sticky and thick with heat.

That being said, AC was one of our requirements when we were looking for a place here in LA. I too have been spoiled and I feel your pain. You’re always welcome to come over :)

When I first came to California I owned an AMC pacer, and drove it across the Southwest from Kansas to move here permanently. If you aren't familiar with a Pacer it's basically a fishbowl on wheels. All windows. And I had no air conditioning. Three days in scorching heat magnified by the magnifying factor of those m,agnifying-tlike windows. Window open, FM radio blasting, and copios amounts of seweat (not to mention the occasional weed supplement.) Eventually, within a year or two hear, the dashboard literally melted, whereupon I gave it up. You can bet my next car had AC. That's all I cared about. I would literally drive it around just to pump up the cold and say, 'Aaaaah.) (By the way, the drive shaft also fell out, which was the nail in the coffin)
