Years ago, we took my mom out for dinner. The waiter attempted to clear her bread and butter plate to prepare for dessert. She held his arm back, and said “Oh don’t touch that, it’s the staff of life”! And so we were taught from childhood.
I love a classic piece of toast with butter - after all, I was born in Wisconsin, where the badger may be the official state animal, bu only because the University football team felt the cow didn't have a big enough intimidation factor. But then I moved away to the culinary sophistication of New York, where I fell in love with olive oil. Combine that with a chunk of warm baguette and a glass of wine and a book of Billy Collins poetry and that's all anyone could ask for.
If you can find it, check out a French movie from the late 60s or 70s called "Diva" for a philosophical discussion of buttered baguettes. Also, kind of a cool nouveau vague crime romance flick.
Will, this one was deliciously defining! I’m not sure what those fancy-ass dishes that were L-Os in your fridge but they sounded scrumptious! My guilty pleasure is a late night snack of a piece of pulled challah with a shmear of butter to satisfy my midnight craving. It seems so harmless, doesn’t it? Recently, we were at Bacari (pronounced: Back-Uh-Ree) and ordered a side of bread…aka baguette…3 bucks for a serving that wouldn’t have been enough for a Lollipop Guild member, let alone a table of 3 young adults & 2 seniors!
I’ll stick to challah! Thank you for this one! WRITE ON!
Hahahha I’m dangerously overwhelmed just reviewing the rules for catan, so YOU’RE IN LUCK, there are lots of games for you to enjoy and for me to play just because I love you.

but gun to your head, bread and butter or bread and olive oil...which are you picking?
Got to go with the hunk of warm baguette and olive oil
Nothing beats a good chunk of warm and crusty sour dough bread with a slab of butter that melts when it hits the warm bread….. heaven!!! ❤️
I couldn't agree more, a perfect bread for buttering!
Bread and butter is actually my bread and butter. That said, give me a pb&j on one of Jackie's homemade baguettes and my day is made.
pb&j is such a classic, can't argue with that choice
Garlic cheese bread!!!
The garlicky the better!
oooo inspired choice
What? No mention of the bagel??? A bagel is bread too, ya know! And a cinnamon raisin bagel soaked with butter is my idea of sweet nirvana. 🥯
I just felt like lumping bagels in with toast was disrespectful. Bagels deserve their own column somewhere down the line!
Butter, butter, butter!

That's a hot tip, I'll have to check it out!
Let me know if you find it, and what you think of it.
